Installation and Operation of a Water Intake and Discharge System – UMEK Expansion

The project to increase the production capacity of UMEK's seafood processing plant in Sept-Iles involves the installation and operation of a surface water intake and discharge system designed to supply lobster holding tanks. The system will be partially installed on lots owned by the Port of Sept-Iles, located at the Mgr-Blanche Terminal, including a water lot situated in Sept-Iles Bay.

The system includes a water intake pipeline and a discharge pipeline, each approximately 200 metres in length and connected to anchoring blocks of approximately 4 m² placed along the shoreline. The pipelines will be installed using directional drilling at a depth of more than 4 metres. This method avoids soil excavation, thereby reducing potential environmental impacts related to the management of excavated materials. All environmental precautionary measures of the Port of Sept-Iles, as published on its website, must be complied with.

The project is authorized by the Ministère de l'Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP) under the Environment Quality Act (EQA) and has also been the subject of an expert opinion from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).
