Tallcree Tribal Government - Dumpsite Remediation

Tallcree Tribal Government intends to consolidate multiple former waste sites into one lined landfill cell to properly remediate the sites. The lined landfill cell will be constructed in proximity to an existing dumpsite with a bulk capacity of 30,000 m^3 and will be capped and closed once all of the waste is consolidated. The cell will not be actively receiving waste. 

Constuction activities include tree clearing, earthworks, installing a geosynthetic clay linear and leachate system, waste removal, capping, fence installation and monitoring once the cell is closed. The Standards for Landfills in Alberta (2010) and the Alberta Code of Practice for Landfills (1996) will be followed. Due to a shallow groundwater table the cell will be constructed partially below ground and partially above ground. The cell footprint will be approximately 120 m x 120 m with a maximum berm height of 3 m to maintain a 3H:1V slope. Local imported materials will be used. Tree clearing will be conducted either outside the nesting period or once a wildlife sweep is conducted. The site will be graded to divert stormwater and allow for adequate drainage without impacting the surrounding environment. Ground monitoring wells will be installed to monitor the groundwater conditions.

September 14, 2025 – The public comment period on the project is closed. The authority is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
