North Caribou Lake First Nation - Backup Power Decommissioning Project

North Caribou Lake First Nation has proposed a decommissioning project for the diesel generating station (DGS). Physical activities include the removal of the fuel tanks, existing generators and related components including step up transformers, the demolition of the DGS building and oil shed, removal of foundations, trailer unit, and site grading. The removal of building materials such as wood, scrap metal, or derelict fuel tanks will be disposed of or repurposed elsewhere in the community should it be deemed fit for use. Most hazardous waste will be removed prior to the start of the project, but there may be trace amounts inside old piping/ diesel generators/ equipment. 

Historical contamination from the DGS and the tanks are present on the project site. 

Latest update

June 9, 2025 - The public comment period on the project is closed. Indigenous Services Canada issued its notice of determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause adverse environmental effects.

April 23, 2025 – Indigenous Services Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting public comments until May 23, 2025 respecting the determination.
