Lloydminster Region Abandonment Project

Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) is proposing to abandon three pipeline segments in the Lloydminster region including the John Lake (2.53 km), John Lake Fort Pitt (12 km) and West Cosine Pipelines (1.57 km). The pipelines have been cleaned and purged and have been in a deactivated state for more than five years and have no prospective future use. CNRL is proposing to abandon the pipelines in place, where they will cut and cap the pipelines at pipeline depth and remove the risers at each end of the pipelines.

The physical abandonment activities will be limited to the pipeline endpoints where the above-ground infrastructure is located. Approximately 4 km of the John Lake Fort Pitt pipeline segment is located on federal lands, Makaoo Indian Reserve 120 (Onion Lake Cree Nation) in Alberta near the border with Saskatchewan, including an end point where a riser and block valve would be removed. Abandonment activities for each pipeline is expected to take approximately 5 days.
