Love Northwestern Ontario

This is my submission for the Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines.  First I would like to say that this is an unnecessary project.  I believe in Rolling Stewardship for the storage of high level nuclear waste.  Keep it in the area where it is made, in robust containers to safely monitor and repackage if it becomes necessary.  If nuclear waste is put in a DGR so many things can go wrong with no way to monitor a leak and no way to fix it.  With all of the handling and repacking that would happen, radiation could escape into the air and environment.  Also scientific research regarding the canisters, bentonite clay and surrounding soil with hydrogen sulphide could cause microbial corrosion.  The studies do not seem to be conclusive and indicating that more real testing needs to be done besides computer models.  This is especially true with the long time scales to be able to predict anything.  If anything is true, there is a lot of uncertainty with too much at stake.

Also as a long time resident of Northwestern Ontario I have a great appreciation fo the land and water in my area.  I have spent many years with my family picking blueberries, mushrooms, hunting and fishing.  I have caught lake trout from Long Lake which is very close to the “preposed” dgr area.  There are many trout lakes in this area, as well as canoe routes in the nearby watersheds. Also heritage sites such as White Otter Castle which is a protected park area.  There are rock paintings and other indigenous sacred areas.   This is as much about mental health and wellbeing.  I have heard other residents say recently, but this is my “home” with much emotion.

This is NOT “Canada’s” plan as we have been led to believe with propaganda.  Yes, I am a true Canadian that wants to protect the natural environment that we are blessed to live in.  It is a pure life with the wilderness that breathes life into our being.  We will protect our area from nuclear waste contamination.
