Please see MTO’s draft Integrated Guidelines comments below. Section 10.2, lines 2167–2171: Traffic Impact Study language Commentary: The reference to aligning with MTO’s Traffic Impact Study Guidelines is appropriate; however, the phrase: “The limits of the study area must be approved by MTO in advance of the preparation of the TIS” could be interpreted as MTO co-defining the assessment scope or implicitly endorsing the adequacy of the project’s transportation approach. Suggested revised wording: “As it relates to transportation activities, the proponent is ...

The NWMO consistently assures people that the high level nuclear fuel waste, the most deadly, toxic and corrosive materials ever known to man, will be kept safely contained in 3mm coated copper canisters once they are emplaced in the earth 500 to 800 metres underground, should the project go forward. 1. Radiation Releases During Transport In such case, it is widely understood from NWMO modeling, that during transport of high level nuclear waste or there would be radiation emissions released – gamma rays and neutrons would not ...

  • The Integrated Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines must provide the NWMO with direction that is sufficiently detailed to result in a detailed impact statement which must support an evidence-based assessment of the NWMO’s proposal and its potential effects. The Agency must ensure that the guidelines are sufficiently thorough and comprehensive in order to achieve a credible and scientifically and socially rigorous review process. In the course of our review we determined that many (or most) of the issues we had raised during the previous comment period on the Initial Project Description have not been addressed in the draft guidelines. We are concerned that the guidelines as drafted will not result in a robust assessment of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s project, which will be to the general disadvantage of Canada and put those along the transportation route and in the vicinity of and downstream from the project at greater risk. We ...
