Port Saint John - West Side Terminal Modernization

The proposed West Side Terminal Modernization Project will extend the Rodney Terminal to Navy Island Terminal, generating a new berth with a length of approximately 340 m. The extended terminal will be able to accommodate larger vessels, to ultimately accommodate an annual throughput capacity of 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs; i.e., a measure of volume in units of twenty-foot long containers). The harbour bottom between Rodney Terminal and the Navy Island Terminal, and within the main channel, will be deepened through dredging and rock removal to facilitate navigation and berthing of the larger ships.Furthermore, the rail yard and onsite road network will be modified to allow for a more efficient storage and flow of container and commercial traffic.

NOTICE OF DETERMINATION

Saint John – 2022-07-04  – Transport Canada has determined that the proposed project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

This determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples;
  • Indigenous knowledge;
  • community knowledge;
  • comments received from the public; and
  • technically and economically feasible mitigation measures

Transport Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Transport Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
